Jeera/Cumin seeds are spices used for their distinctive flavor and aroma which when crushed gives a slightly bitter taste and adds a warm feeling to the food. It is used as an essential flavoring in many cuisines, particularly South Asian, Northern African and Latin American cuisines.
Jeera is the main ingredient for this recipe and this dish is popular among north Indians and Pakistanis as an everyday rice dish.
In this simple jeera rice recipe, we temper jeera with ghee to bring out its aromatic flavors, which is used in other dishes as a condiment to add more flavor.
It is a one-pot jeera rice recipe cooked in a pan and the preparation steps are very simple as it involves fewer spices and takes only about 5 to 10 minutes to finish the process. Both leftover rice and freshly cooked rice are used to make pan cooked jeera rice.
Jeera rice can also be made in a pressure cooker, which makes the process even simpler. This can be an everyday rice dish as the process is simple and can also be used as a regular lunch box dish.
You can serve it with side dishes like dal or any other gravy or curry.
How to make jeera rice recipe with step by step instructions:
To make jeera rice/cumin rice first take a pan and heat it with ghee and oil. Once the ghee and oil are heated, add cumin seeds. Roast the cumin/jeera seeds till it splitters.
Next, add some salt and black pepper powder and mix it well along with roasted cashews. The jeera/cumin mixture is ready.
Next and final step is to add boiled rice(leftover or freshly cooked) to the mixture and mix well. Saute for a few seconds and then jeera/cumin rice is ready.
For jeera/cumin rice in a pressure cooker, follow step 1 but in a cooker. Then add water and add soaked rice. Close and cook for 3 whistles. jeera rice is ready.
Note: for ordinary rice: use the ratio 1:2. that is for 1 part of rice use 2 parts of water

Jeera rice/ Indian Cumin Rice
- 1 tsp Ghee
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1 Cup Cooked regular rice If basmati rice then the ratio is 1(rice): 1 1/2 water
- black pepper powder
- Salt to taste
- 5 Cashews
- Now a pan and heat it with ghee and oil
- Add cumin seeds and fry till its aromatic and now add salt and pepper and mix well
- Add few cashews and saute well
- Add the cooked rice and mix well
- After few seconds of sauteing jeera rice is ready to serve
Serve hot with dal or any other curry of your choice!
