Looking for a quick meal to prepare to get you through time crunching mornings? Well, this Onion rice recipe is for you. Either you want it to consume it as a meal or a quick filler in the evening, this recipe comes in handy. For best results Saute the onion till it turns golden brown.


Heat oil in a wide pan. Add 2 tbsp oil

3. Add mustard seeds and wait for it to crack

4. The, Add 1 tbsp of urad dal and chana dal.

Saute well till it turns golden brown

5. Next, add the curry leaves and onions. [Pick a medium-sized onion and slice it vertically into thin pieces]

6. Add green chili. [1 small size chili, chopped into small pieces]

Saute well, till the onion turns translucent and then golden brown

7. Add 1/4 tbsp of hing or asafoetida

8. Add salt as required

9. Add rice[Freshly cooked/leftover rice]. I used freshly cooked rice.

Mix the rice well with the masala. Then, switch off the stove and close the pan. wait for a minute and then serve.

  • 1 Bowl Cooked rice
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 tbsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tbsp Urad dal
  • 1 tbsp Chana dal
  • 1/4 tbsp Hing/Aforesaid powder
  • 1 Medium Onion
  • 1 Small Green chili
  • Salt to taste


  • Heat oil in a wide pan.
  • Add mustard seeds, urad dal, and chana dal.
  • Once the mustard seeds start crackling add the onions and green chili.
  • Saute the onion till it turns golden brown color.
  • Add hing/asafoetida powder.
  • Then add salt, cooked/leftover rice and mix well.
  • Your Onion rice is ready to serve


Serve hot with any other curry of your choice!
